Immediate denture
Immediate dentures are partial or complete dentures made using an impression of natural teeth before extraction of one or more teeth. These dentures are fitted on the same day. These dentures allow the extracted teeth to be replaced during the healing period (between 3 to 12 months) while waiting for permanent dentures to be fabricated. Immediate dentures are more aesthetically pleasing than no dentures at all and keep blood clots in place, thus promoting healing and preventing infections.
During the healing period, tissue conditioners (temporary cushions) are placed into the dentures to fill the gap created by the healing of the gums. These conditioners allow for better adherence to the gum and ensure the dentures are functional. Bone remodelling is more pronounced in early stages of healing which leads to more visits and frequent addition of tissue conditioners.
